Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves an injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to stick together, and therefore blood cannot run through it. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view. Sclerotherapy is a well-proven procedure and has been in use since the 1930s.
A single blood vessel may have to be injected more than once, a few weeks apart, depending mostly on its size. In any one treatment session, a number of vessels can be injected.
Appropriate candidates for sclerotherapy are those individuals who have spider or varicose veins and the desire to change their appearance. As there is little to no pain experienced by patients, anesthesia is rarely required, we do offer a topical anesthetic if the patient feels it necessary. Generally, treatment time is 30 minutes to an hour. Two or more sclerotherapy treatments are usually required to achieve optimal results.
